It is mentioned that vlc can be used for video playback. How can I change this setting? Right now, non-admin rights on my workplace PC keep me from fiddling with the quicktime install.

Thank you,

When you add a data source (e.g., video) there is a menu at the bottom of the file selection window that lets you choose the plugin used to play that source. See for more information.

I would try using the JavaFX plugin before VLC. The VLC plugin has not been under active development for some time so may be much more buggy than the other ones.
